Need Answers? Tune In

Hearing God in Your Day-to-Day Life

Did you know the average person makes 33,000 to 35,000 decisions per day (Harvard Business Review)? On the low end, that’s 231,000 decisions per week.

And more than 12 million decisions per year.

Some of those decisions are automatic, or require little thought—get out of bed, what to eat, which lane to choose, to fist bump or high five. But others are a little heavier—which college to attend, what job to take, how to parent, whom to marry, what car to buy.

So how do you navigate all those decisions? How can you make the correct one?

You have to tune in.

At any given moment, there are radio waves traveling all around you and through you. They pass through the atmosphere, weather, and building materials. For the most part, you don’t even know the waves are there.

Similarly, God is always trying to communicate with us. His words are flowing all around as He desires to be involved in our day-to-day and life-changing decisions. But if we’re not tuned into the exact station—or if our “radio” is turned off— we’ll never hear what’s being broadcast. It’ll just be the static and noise of the world.

But, in a noisy and crowded world, how can you decipher when you have the right channel and God is the one speaking? How do you know it’s not just your thoughts? When could it be Satan?

Like with personal relationships, the more time you spend with someone, the easier it would be for you to pick out their voice in a crowd. You’d know what they sound like, how they talk, etc. The same goes for God. And a great starting point to build that relationship is His Word.

When God speaks, it is always in line with the Bible. So, if we don’t know His word it can be hard to decipher His voice. But, by reading the word, and especially seeing how Jesus interacts with people, we can come to recognize His characteristics.

We know that when He speaks, His voice brings “no condemnation” (Romans 8:1). That’s not to say He won’t bring us correction, He just does it in an uplifting way. Think of how He treats the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11) or how Jesus restores Peter after he denied Him (John 21:15-17).

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

-John 3:17

Therefore, any voice bringing worry, fear, or shame is not the Lord's—feel free to tune it out. His words bring peace because the Lord has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1).

Jesus’ words are a lamp to our feet, and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). So, we know that when the Lord speaks to us, it doesn’t bring confusion—the way forward is clear. We also know that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). That means that, no, God’s not telling you to cheat on your spouse because it’s the year 2024 and times have changed—nor anything else that goes against His Word.

So, tune out the noise—whether it be the phone beeping, the news on the television, or even your own thoughts—and tune into “KGOD.” It may be hard at first to shut it all off but it's worth it. Perhaps start by setting a goal of reading a Bible chapter each day. Maybe even write down what He speaks to you, or what you got from the chapter. Come to know His voice which will always guide you to right decision, direction, or action every time.

Because at 12 million decisions per year, you can’t afford not to hear from Him.
